In Africa the Pope declares
That sorcery is nothing more
Than witchcraft, as though unawares
That exorcists have much rapport
With native doctors, who daresay
Their treatment evil drives away.

He also told his faithful throng
That condoms shouldn’t keep in check
The AIDS that carries death headlong
In sub-Sahara lands breakneck.
In lieu that people ought to show
Restraint that Romans, say, forgo.

So, in their city do as they
(Unless, of course, you’re Benedict!).
In Africa, please don’t inveigh
Against what Africans depict
As often that which Jesus said.
Ask whether it’s as wise, instead.
