Michael Redux

Vick rhymes with sick and other slurs
That don’t require mention here.
What’s mattered most is what occurs
Upon resuming his career—
Not killing dogs that wouldn’t fight
By means that decency benight.

His coach and owner both concede
He’d not have made the team unless
His running, passing, filled a need
For added quarterback finesse.
And though he speaks for canine rights,
Much skepticism he invites.

Augustine best said what I mean:
Repentance is a new pure heart,
A way to scrub the record clean.
Can only saints such thoughts impart?
Not so! As to the Eagles’ stance,
Obama praised the second chance.

A former sinner’s apt defense
When wishing others can forgive,
Vick counsels from experience
And hopes good words and works outlive
The memories of Leavenworth
And dwell instead on his rebirth.

He’d also like to get a pup.
(Should pedophiles have a kid?)
Whenever will the time be up
For not recalling what he did?
If human life is heaven sent,
All animals are innocent.
