Gods Below

My New Year’s wish 2011,
For U.N. delegates and heaven,
Is, by this time 2012,
Belief in one God we’ll all shelve.

A polytheist pact would note
That, much more than Jehovah smote,
Extremist deadly plots have swirled
In Allah’s name around the world.

Most focused in Afghanistan,
Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
But what if they could both agree
To Jesus as a deity?

No easy matter, understood,
Unless the Pope could see some good
In sighing Allah Akbar soft.
(It might not mean a thing aloft.)

It’s not as though the popes don’t owe
The Muslims pardon for much woe,
And also Jews in the Crusades,
Those deadly Christian escapades.

In years past, Irish Protestants
And Roman Catholics glanced askance
While venerating their same Christ
And trying to see each other iced.

The all-time worst, the Holocaust,
In which six million Jews were lost,
Was led by Hitler, infidel,
But Gentiles lent support as well.

If more than one God won’t succeed,
Perhaps we need a brand new creed
That worships—ending all this drama—
Yahwehjesusallahbrahma.
