Island Inferno

A year has passed since Haiti’s quake.
And yet a million refugees
Still live a life that makes hearts ache
With cholera, a fell disease,
And rubble all around their tents.
They crave a turn of these events.

Ten billion dollars patrons pledge
To lift them from their misery
One billion so far’s been their hedge
While waiting for a guarantee
A newly chosen government
Will see donations get well spent.

Enforcing better building codes
Would be a valid place to start.
Conniving lack of them forebodes
More double-dealing off the chart
About which shrewd investors frown.
Like Humpty Dumpty, all falls down.

Bill Clinton and the Pentagon,
Improbably as well, Sean Penn,
Have unobtrusively forgone
Much hype to help rebuild again.
Perhaps the gentlemen would seize
The Haitian Palace. Don’t laugh, please!
