What Could be Worse

His congresswoman fights to live
Despite his efforts otherwise.
Deranged, he’s one you can’t forgive
Unless you’re looking through his eyes
At some insane grotesquery
That few if any want to see.

In Arizona, old enough
At twenty-two to pistol-pack
The NRA will not rebuff
The means concealed for his attack
And deaths of six, but might begrudge
A pre-teen girl’s and U.S. judge.

Why Gaby Giffords, Democrat,
A Blue Dog gun-rights champion?
Young Loughner’s brain it seems begat
Ideas the country’s come undone:
All politicians are at fault,
To which he’ll somehow put a halt.

And now some gifted candidate
May give a run a second thought
And yield to someone second rate
Who’ll keep the public discourse fraught
With rage so it’s no better than
What’s politic in Pakistan.
