Here Come the Brides, and Grooms

In some states fifty years ago
If whites wed blacks, they broke the law.
Today in thirty-one, Jim Crow
Might tip his hat at what he saw:
Gay couples who can’t tie the knot.
Why? Legislators’ tommyrot!

For none of us can have a say
About the color of our skin
Or whether we are straight or gay
Because of reasons deep within:
The DNA of chromosomes
That build our multiform genomes

So let us hope our Supreme Court
Will rule gay marriage bona fide.
It’s useless if it tries to thwart
What now has history on its side
And soon should be as commonplace
As couples heedless of their race.
