What Are We Fighting For?

Though for the most part, we’re devout,
Ofttimes Americans don’t know
Just what their faith is all about,
Responses to a survey show.

Near half the canvassed Protestants
Could not name Martin Luther as
The first to give their congregants
Deaf ears to what a Pontiff says.

Near half of Catholics didn’t grasp
That in their Mass the bread and wine
Derived from Jesus’s last gasp,
His body rent and blood divine.

In any case, we shouldn’t dwell
In details. Strife there finds its roots.
It's where the devil dwells as well.
More safe are pious absolutes.

Especially the ones called God,
Or, Yahweh, Buddha, Higher Power.
With whom worldwide have angels trod
’Neath minaret and belfry tower.

We share more than you might believe
Specifically our holy men.
Like Moses— far from Tel Aviv!—
A prophet, Muslim/Christian.

Al Qaeda and the Taliban
Are holy as a wild beast.
They’re no more Muslim than a man
In whom humanity has ceased.

So when nutcases want to burn
Korans because of hijacked planes,
Themselves into these monsters turn
And hijack, too, their soul in chains.
