Already All But Over

Election year 2012
I’d hoped would offer more suspense:
At minimum till springtime shelve
The choice of candidate who’d thence
The colors of the GOP
Advance as party nominee.

But sinners they’re (now) to a man.
They’ve broken Ronald Reagan’s rule:
Speak ill of no Republican,
So don’t tell stories out of school
About each other in debates,
Which voter discontent creates.

Mitt Romney stays above the fray
As best can one whose heels are nipped.
A quarter of the votes in play
Are all he needs to not get whipped.
With half a dozen on his tail,
Such small pluralities prevail.

Against Obama, different odds—
More clever need he’ll be by half.
The SuperPacs will furnish wads
Though these become a golden calf
If evangelicals don’t vote
Because a Mormon’s got their goat.

Contrarily, the president,
Is good at churning out his base.
Employment figures in ascent
Have given him some breathing space,
And with the markets on the rise,
May swing states turn as blue as skies!
