Saccharine though the news bits are,
Overblown week after week,
Bo the White House dog is our
Icon more ideal than chic.
Family members often brawl,
Yet they rally round their pet.
All for one, thus all for all?
Quarrels maybe they’ll forget.
When they watch Obamas towed
On a leash across the lawn,
Happy as the First Abode,
It could be a lesson drawn.
Fractured families, homes impaired,
Rather than a sentinel—
Nostrils flared, incisors bared—
Get a dog that’s functional.
