The Shakespeare in All of Us

We shrug off chats if folks don’t yell
While riding on a crowded bus.
But even whispers over cells
Bring out the very worst in us.
Why is this? Cornell research found
We share with playwrights common ground.

Their livelihood’s been dialogue:
Once more unto the breach, dear friends . . .The researchers coined halfalogue
When dear friends on the other ends
Unheard leave us, who’ve lost their thread,
Composing what they might have said.

Instead of Mornin’, you look fine.
And you as well. Want company?
It’s Hi, guess who is on the line.(He pauses, then) Who else but me?What did the other person say
That caused reaction of dismay?

I accidentally dropped the phone(and clarifying why no noise,
As though indeed she were alone
Instead of bedding neighbor boys)
It landed on your pillow, Dear.
I don’t know why you’re sounding queer.

So rather than complete reports
That bosses want to see by noon.
Act One Scene Two shows jockey shorts
Oh please hang up slapdashly strewn.
How could I think of such a thing?
Don’t let me hear another ring!
