Wake Up, It's Dangerous Outside

Reagan National Airport’s tower,
Serving Washington, D.C.,
First reported, lost its power
After midnight. Could that be?
Not so fast. Read more and weep.
The lone controller fell sleep.

Meantime two flights notwithstanding
(Night-shift ground crews kept their distance)
Out of contact, made a landing
Lacking traffic-safety clearance.
Third crew heard the guy responsive,
Nearby shout line on and active.

That’s an FAA-placed squawk box
Good, if no one has replied
Since they’re useful as alarm clocks.
Better, partners open-eyed.
Best, a doomed black-box recording
Passengers, their last flight boarding.
