Ready the Shovels

Obama’s got to emulate
A grand idea of FDR:
To circumvent a welfare state,
Appoint a public projects czar
Like Harry Hopkins, Franklin’s guy
To make sure ready shovels fly.

For work cannot come soon enough;
Recession's once more at our door.
The jobless can’t put on the cuff
Indefinitely at the store,
Despite what hard luck they invoke,
Their basic needs. The firms go broke.

The rich will only buy so much
Despite how little that they’re taxed.
The rest in equities they clutch.
Some tax codes even more relaxed
Allow large companies to pay
No taxes, to us chumps’ dismay.

More pressing than the national debt,
Which next month we can start to slice,
Is buying clout that jobs beget
So business owners get their price
And hire those who’ve repaired roads
Before our country’s wealth implodes.
