What Have We Become?

The nation-building years since our
Initial Independence Day
Saw broad-based immigration flower.
Those fit to hold their own could stay.
If law-abiding, strangers tasked
Could hold a job, no questions asked.

Today in some states cops can stop
Latinos just for how they look,
While in the fields a rotting crop
Awaits their toil. But by the book
Their trek ends back where it began.
I think it’s un-American.

We’ve still got lots of room for those
Who—like our forebears—do the work
That might just keep their kids in clothes
And most of us prefer to shirk.
To honor Thomas Jefferson
Let’s see such tyranny undone.
