Eunice Kennedy Shriver 1921-2009

For those who haven’t all their wits
Through not one failing of their own,
Delight can come in little bits.
To have it all’s a goal unknown.

Herself from birth she lacked for naught,
Which gave her luxury of means
To help these folks who’d never sought
To rise above confined routines.

The global games she brought about,
Olympics specially to lift
Their sometimes battered souls, leave doubt
The race is always to the swift.

They win by simply being there
And, for it, hearing thousands scream.
They learn how much the world can care,
And ratchet up their self-esteem.

Eunice Shriver, a Kennedy,
Did what any forthright queen does.
Urging games around the world, she
Put her money where her mouth was.
