Bran' New River

There’s a result that the Mississippi,
Rained upon, snowed upon, mightily,
All but made sure, a Midwest of troubles
Farther downstream, worse the flooding be.

Mississippi,
That leveed channel,
It don’t know runoff,
Its flood plains cut off.
Louisiana,
Just tell your farmers so long.

They won’t plant string beans,
They won’t plant cotton,
To save New Orleans,
They’ll be forgotten,
Just like the floodgates
Their fields soon fallow, so long.

You and me, Back East, Out West,
Got a good taste of the winter’s wet.
But didn’t watch
A river crest,
Towns and cities
Under threat.

I get weary
Of dumb denials
Disputing theory
That warming spirals
And therefore moisture
Makes flooding yours and my wrong.
