Wanna Buy a Grocery?

Deleveraging’s a clumsy word
Although in deed it saved Detroit
It means to draw down debt deferred
Like borrowed money to exploit
Investment opportunities
Or housing funds from mortgagees.

But if someone can’t pay what’s owed
We all know what the bank does next.
In several months the home’s foreclosed.
The family lifestyle’s more perplexed.
Perhaps they must pay more to rent
With less for clothes and nourishment.

We rescued Chrysler and GM
With bailouts for big chunks of stock,
Which we’ll divest. We’ve rescued them.
In not much time they’re out of hock,
Their workers, ruin, too, elude
To pay the mortgage, buy more food.

A merchant like the grocer thrives.
The cash turns over where it counts,
The vital middle-class survives
To buy and sell in large amounts.
So if they’re close to shutting doors
Let’s buy shares in their homes and stores.
