Our Home-Grown Pioneers

Stay-out-of-jail cards aren’t as good
As green cards for tomorrow’s Yanks.
Those issued, though, this summer should
Prompt young undocumenteds’ thanks.
If here since kids, they’re free to roam
For two years as though right at home.

Which in effect, they mostly were.
Illegal parents sneaked them in.
But careful not to make a stir
They went to school without chagrin
And worked to help support a dream
They hope to straightaway redeem.

In other words they’re just the sort
We need to keep the nation strong,
Not privileged brats we must exhort
To more than merely get along,
But strive as once upon our plains
Determined forebears grasped their reins.

Latino youths can also yearn
To be our neo-pioneers.
A Dream Act passed is what they’ll earn
If to his plan Barack adheres.
Routinely where the hard work’s done,
It's español that’s being spun.
