How to better reach the Afghans?
Nothing like it holds a candle.
Neither we nor Talibans.
Rather, call it Afghan Idol.
Knockoff of our talent program,
Theirs is shown without a scowl.
Entrants couldn’t give a goddam
If they face a Simon Cowell.
Worrisome much more are death threats.
Women dancing and no scarves on
Put fanatics into cold sweats
Spreading word her end is forgone.
Most important is the number:
One in three Afghans tune in,
Elements that ought to harbor
Hope the Talibans can’t win.
True, they order women covered,
In the streets and marketplaces.
Nonetheless, they can’t keep smothered
What goes on behind those faces.
