Time to Roll the Dice

No longer have I any doubt
Of whom they mainly hold in awe,
Who holds the Grand Old Party’s clout
He’s schadenfreude’s Rush Limbaugh.

Perceptive Germans coined the term
To name what darkly warms us all:
The pleasure watching others squirm
From what would make our own skin crawl.

Remember how, not long ago,
Rush hoped Obama’s plans would fail,
No matter the amount of woe
That further national needs entail?

Now, as the country’s wealth abates,
With barely masqueraded glee,
They point to rising jobless rates,
Statistics counting folks like me?

They trot such numbers out as proof
The White House fiscal stimulus
Has outlays going through the roof
And promises to ruin us.

Before another year has lapsed
To turn out jobs as first was planned,
They’d wish by then the hope’s collapsed,
Mid-term elections soon at hand.

Perhaps it’s one big crapshoot, but
What choice is there except to try?
The bankers left us in a rut,
And Wall Street hanging out to dry.

Besides, who’s worth more, they or we?
2010, while at the polls,
I hope by then we’ll all agree
These aren’t the times to try men’s souls.
