Getting What We'll Pay For

Wisconsin’s vote to sap the might
Of public-service employees,
By cutting benefits and right
To barter wages, guarantees
A budget surplus but as well,
A risky kind of personnel.

The unions’ effort to recall
Scott Walker, governor, conked out.
So in his eyes, these cuts stand tall,
A GOP decisive rout
That does away with deficits,
But blows a staff’s morale to bits.

Such statutes, known as right-to-work,
Are being eyed by other states.
Tea Partyers must only smirk
At how the moniker conflates
Permission with less weekly dough,
When no AFL-CIO.

I’m worried that the lesser pay
Will have its worst effect in class
Where teachers low-paid anyway
Might just decide to leave en masse
To be replaced by lesser brains.
The kids don’t need more growing pains.
