He Had His Chance

Dick Cheney says we’re less secure:
Barack Obama’s too naïve
To guard the country.
What manure!
The ex-veep would that we believe
That in the end as president,
His Doub’ya’s views were different.

But not by much. Guantanamo,
Obama, candidate, wished closed.
George Bush himself agreed although
The detainees’ displacement posed,
As much in GOP regard,
Perhaps, but not in my backyard.

The new chief, too, has modified
His campaign view that we’d be wrong
To let a military court abide
Particulars that don’t belong
In U.S. courts—facts secondhand.
(Coerced confessions, though, are banned.)

Besides, the former White House ceased,
In face of criticism churned,
Inflicting routine pain at least
In all but several cases learned.
And fighting for Afghanistan,
Obama’s got the fiercer plan.

When Cheney claims that we’re at risk
Because Obama thinks like Bush,
I mumble mightily tsk-tsk.
These aren’t ideas I’d want to push.
If Doub’ya he couldn’t tame,
He’s only got himself to blame.
