Catching ZZZ's

Imagine we’re a corporate firm
That needs to sell its stock or bond,
Though for the current fiscal term
We’ve got no budget, and beyond,
Directors don’t agree at all,
As eavesdropped on a conference call.

Near midnight, Eastern Daylight Time,
Investors from around the world
Heard two sides getting off the dime
That followed weeks of brick-brats hurled
And, with a stopgap spending vote,
Hope six more months to stay afloat.

Next month they need to borrow more
By issuing securities
To pay their debts, or risk’s in store.
For its sake, pray the board agrees.
If on what’s now owed, they default,
Their good name’s subject to assault.

The global money markets seize
Upon the firm’s gold-standard rank.
If Triple A’s turn into Z’s,
It means worldwide, investments tank.
Its costs to borrow multiply.
To pay, its prices jump sky-high.

Perhaps like taxes, except for
A country where the option’s no,
Which means what decent folks abhor,
The aged, ill and poor forgo
The help they need. The unborn, too,
Should cuts their benefits undo.
