An Extravagant Proposal

The government might close this week
If congressmen can’t pass a bill
With cuts House GOPers seek
In funding for the old and ill—
Their Medicare and Medicaid
And SS, into which they’ve paid.

And all this time a company
That keeps a lot of cash offshore,
Notoriously like GE
Pays zero income tax. What’s more
The IRS gives billions back
To keep it further in the black.

The rest of us are in the red
Collectively as fiscal chumps.
Since W our coffers bled
To see to it the Donald Trumps
Maintain their economic health,
But don’t, like The Donald, spread their wealth.

So what’s the answer? Turn to Swift,
Incisive Irish satirist,
Whom heartless British rulers miffed.
They barely let his isle subsist.
He modestly proposed for food,
The natives slay their youngest brood.

So I propose an instant growth
Of public euthanasia schemes.
The poor or elderly or both
Could die and in their final dreams
Instead envision children’s lives
As those in which decorum thrives.
