Charlie Wilson's Post War

I’m sorry Charlie Wilson died,
The wild Texas congressman
Who, anti-Soviet rebels plied,
(They then became the Taliban)
With Stinger missiles, ground-to-air,
That sowed Red chopper crews’ despair.

The Kremlin promptly pulled its troops
From occupied Afghanistan.
Amid some laudatory whoops
He urged a reconstruction plan
To rebuild war-torn roads and schools,
Not just a show of Reds as fools.

His colleagues on the Hill said no
To what might unify the land,
And let the Afghan tribes bestow
Upon the Taliban, command,
Al Qaeda as its chief ally,
Which rained death from Manhattan’s sky.

Today the Taliban is spent
From fighting NATO (mainly us)
And wants a share of government.
Though Charlie might have made a fuss
If ex-friends just this much prevailed
Unless their women walked unveiled.
