The World is Not Our Beat

Hats off to Secretary Gates
As he departs the Pentagon.
Undiplomatically he states
How much conclusion is foregone
That when it comes to join a fight
Most NATO allies opt for flight.

From Libya, across their pond
Most European members shrink.
The Brits and French wage war. Beyond?
Proximity alone you’d think
Would make some others lend a hand
To calm a nearby unhinged land.

More NATO troops have joined with us
To battle in Afghanistan
Our nemeses in lawlessness,
Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
But some perks raise a question mark:
The Spaniards won’t fight after dark.

Alliances can run their course
Like that to fight the Soviets.
From now on, for an ad hoc force
To overcome secluded threats
Let’s help by sending in a drone,
Not troops so frequently alone.
