What's God Got To Do With It

When NBC omitted God
While airing our Allegiance Pledge
I petulantly found it odd
So many viewers felt on edge.
In Resurrection School, no less,
We pledged a sort of godlessness.

One nation indivisible,
With liberty and justice, though—
Not audibly or visibly—
Did anyone His name bestow
Before our ‘50s Commie scare
Allowed that under God be there.

But some Americans opine
We’re under just the moon and stars,
And should not church and state entwine.
This First Amendment ban is ours.
So what’s God doing on our coins,
The native-atheist rejoins.

If freedom from, like freedom of,
Religion is our civil right,
What matters who or what’s above
While we direct our earthly plight?
For better, even if for worse,
We’re centers of our universe.
