Fewer Boots

I think Obama’s got it right,
Or guessed as well as anyone,
About how long and much to fight
A war that’s—ten years old—outrun
The nation’s patience and reserves.
Afghanistan is on our nerves.

The Kabul government’s corrupt.
Beyond, provincial tribes hold sway.
From time to time disputes erupt.
Most live to fight another day.
Because it’s unaccountable,
The country’s insurmountable

We worry more of whom it hides,
Al Qaeda and the Taliban,
But each is damaged, and besides
Both pose more threat in Pakistan.
We face apocalyptic kooks
If either grabs the nation’s nukes,

Islamabad says they’re secure.
That’s nice, however, just in case,
I hope we’ve plans to be more sure
Of clearing out their hiding place
Should terrorists detect a stash
In hopes of turning us to ash.

With fewer boots soon on the ground
To try to salvage such a mess,
Let CIA shoes prowl around
And hope both Stans will acquiesce
If, once again said kooks are known,
To letting in an offshore drone.
