Arab Summer

The best news from a Muslim land
Since crowds declared their Arab Spring
Is how much Libyans understand
The means the Western world can bring
To see their country modernize,
And cut militias down to size.

Gaddafi, to be sure, they slew
But some are carving out their sods,
Which run  the risk of hell anew,
A tribal anarchy at odds
With any democratic plan—
As witnessed in Afghanistan.

Last week Benghazi residents
Closed down armed groups that stir up strife
Including one that represents
The biggest threat to modern life
And guilty of what most deplore:
The death of our ambassador.

The culprits cite a U.S. vid
That shows Mohammed as a clown.
Meantime our late-night comics kid
Of word that Jesus bedded down
A Mary thought to be His wife.
So can’t these street thugs get a life?
