As Also the World Watches

Such matters might seem frivolous
Amid a presidential race
What counts, though, for this grumpy gus
Is whether candidates debase
Avoidably not just their foes
But, too, themselves, in fabled prose.

Like Ryan’s fictive marathon
Achieved inside three hours’ time,
When records showed that four were gone:
Mendacity, though not a crime,
The sort that shows its spouters flout
A danger that they’ll be found out

Like some of Romney’s prep-school friends
Recalled they pinned a gay guy down
For Mitt to chop some bleach-blond ends,
Perhaps, he said, which earns a frown.
Who could such shamelessness dispel?
A watching world might  ask as well.
