Jim Crow Redux

As they’re a cure with no disease,
Those voter photo-ID laws,
A brainstorm of the GOP’s
To thwart Latinos without cause
From casting ballots as allowed,
Republicans should hold heads bowed.

They’re not precluding immigrants
Illegal and unregistered,
Who in no likely circumstance
Would want to see suspicions stirred
By going to a polling place
And maybe deportation face.

Germane are citizens like me
Who—unlike—don’t have time or cash
To get the requisite ID.
Does this, though, make them brown-skinned trash?
That’s nowhere near the issue’s at.
It’s rather most vote Democrat.

For blacks, the laws have heritage
From Jim Crow days when reading tests
And poll-tax levies clinched the edge
That whites enjoyed as choice bequests.
A century, blacks kept hopes alive
And got the vote in ‘65.
